The hospitality sector is called upon to respond to new challenges: the current situation, in fact, appears to be related to multiple factors (medical – especially in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic -, behavioural/relational, but also technological, with an acceleration in particular of the use and application of digital technologies); both existing and newly conceived hospitality structures are called upon to confront new requirements and needs in order to acquire new formats and service identities, in different locations and contexts and in relation to the new needs of a varied public, different from the traditional reference categories.

The new hospitality scenario is facing a series of new formats, also in the light of that process of “functional hybridisation” that does not only concern the hospitality sector, but is also common to many other historical typologies (residences, offices, entertainment spaces, cultural spaces, …). Designing “hybrid” structures, but also managing them, implies a considerable level of skills and sensitivity to be acquired or implemented at different levels and roles.

Technology has always been at the basis of typological, spatial and service transformations in the field of hospitality and accommodation facilities. Sustainability appears to be an increasingly necessary basis for every project and management action, and for some time now it has been a privileged area for the application of a “green” approach. Sustainability must be understood in a broad sense, not only as environmental sustainability, but must involve the entire process of design, construction, management, … up to the disposal and reuse of the accommodation facility.
